Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi has referenced his Ballon d’Or win when joining up with the COP28 team that is fighting to “save the planet”.
- Argentine icon putting influence to good use
- Has joined calls for change in climate crisis
- Looking to enjoy another win away from pitch
WHAT HAPPENED?
As one of the most recognisable and influential figures in world football, with his celebrity status now transcending his chosen profession, it comes as no surprise to find that Messi has been asked to add his voice to those calling for immediate action in the battle to protect the Earth for future generations.

WHAT MESSI SAID
Messi is happy to get involved and has said in the promotional video produced by COP28 during the latest United Nations Climate Change conference being held in the UAE – with the Argentine superstar pictured holding what initially appears to be a Golden Ball: “What I have in my hands, it’s something very precious. It’s pure gold. There’s just one. With effort and a sense of community we can take care of it. Join efforts for JOIN THE PLANET, so with this play, together we can change the planet.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE
COP28 are looking for the global population to unite behind a “let’s work together to save the planet for future generations” message, with Messi now fully on board. He is a man that has grown accustomed to winning down the years, and will be hoping that another triumph can be added to his CV away from the pitch.
WHAT NEXT FOR MESSI?
World Cup winner Messi is now playing his club football in the United States with MLS outfit Inter Miami, having bid farewell to Europe on the back of spells at Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, and is – with 44 major honours to his name and countless individual prizes – now the most decorated player of all-time.
