Paris Saint-Germain 1-1 Newcastle: Kylian Mbappe frustrated by wastefulness as Parisians salvage late point

Kylian Mbappe was left to rue several missed opportunities in Paris Saint-Germain’s 1-1 draw with Newcastle. Mbappe converted a hugely controversial penalty in stoppage time to earn the French champions a point. But despite essentially being given a get-out-of-jail free card, the striker felt a point was scant reward for their efforts on the night. A win v Borussia Dortmund will seal progress.

Kylian Mbappe was frustrated with Paris Saint-Germain’s wastefulness in front of goal after drawing 1-1 with Newcastle at the Parc des Princes.Mbappe’s controversial stoppage-time penalty salvaged a point for the French champions, cancelling out Alexander Isak’s first-half opener.Referee Szymon Marciniak was called over to the pitchside monitor by the VAR, and harshly determined that Tino Livramento had handled the ball inside the box.

The decision stunned fans, players and pundits alike, as Mbappe dispatched the subsequent penalty to claim a draw. However, the striker believes the game should have been won comfortably after missing a series of glorious openings.“I tried to be on my best level every night, to be important for my national team and club. It’s my job to score goals and help the guys,” he told TNT Sports.

“I could’ve helped my team more though because I had many chances and I didn’t score more goals tonight.“You’ve seen in many Champions League games that you have to score when you get the opportunities.“We had nine or 10 clear chances and we don’t score. If we play like this in Dortmund and score good goals, we’ll be okay.”PSG will book their place in the knockout stages with a win over Borussia Dortmund in their final group match.

Any other result opens up the door for Newcastle, who must beat AC Milan at home in their last game to stand a chance of progress.“We had so many chances, normally you have to win,” added Mbappe.”But in football you can be better in the game and not score and not win, and that’s what happened.“It’s hard for us but we have another game in Dortmund and we have to win because we want to be top of the group.”Dortmund sealed their place in the last 16 with a 3-1 victory at the San Siro, thanks to goals from Marco Reus, Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Karim Adeyemi. The final Group F fixtures take place on Wednesday, December 13.
