Netflix Gives Fans a Behind-the-Scenes Look at One Piece Season 2

One Piece is building anticipation for its second season by offering a glimpse at the creative team behind the scenes.

Netflix has given One Piece fans a sneak peek into the Season 2 writer’s room.

In a photo shared on the official Netflix One Piece X account, fans were introduced to the creative team, including showrunner Matt Owens, responsible for making Season 1 of the live-action adaptation a major hit. “Meet the writers’ room for Season 2. We can’t wait to share what adventures we have in store,” the caption said. The gathering was possible after the strike led by the Writers Guild of America ended on Sep. 27.

Owens previously confirmed that pre-production on One Piece Season 2 had resumed, with the scripts being a top priority so that set building and scheduling can begin. Owens admitted that the writing is “still going to take some time” since the team was only able to finish a couple of story outlines before the Writers Guild of America strike.

Luffy Will Face Leadership Challenges In Season 2

He also offered some insight into what fans can expect from Luffy when One Piece returns with new episodes. “Without saying too much, and speaking to any new characters that we might meet, I would say a major theme that we’re working with in Season 2 is the challenge of leadership,” Owens said. He also hinted at the difficulties the pirate crew will face as they enter the treacherous Grand Line.

“From Luffy’s perspective, he’s got his crew now, and they are setting out to the Grand Line,” Ownes continued. “They’re doing the thing, and there are a lot of challenges that come with that responsibility. And that theme ties into some other stories and characters that I won’t give away just yet. But the challenge and leadership is a big theme for us in Season 2.”

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos recently revealed that casting One Piece’s Luffy was among the most difficult jobs in the company’s history. “Inaki Godoy, who stars in the show, it was — one of the most difficult casting challenges in the history of our original programming was who’s gonna play Monkey D. Luffy,” Sarandos explained. “And he was right under our nose, right in our talent family.”

“We discovered [Godoy] a couple of years ago and had him in this great show in our Mexican series called Who Killed Sara?, and then we were able to cast him in this, and now he’s a global superstar,” Sarandos continued. One Piece director Marc Jobst explained that Godoy had “heart, warmth, and chemistry” to make viewers “fall in love” with the character.

All eight episodes of One Piece Season 1 are now available to stream on Netflix.
