Journalist Simon Johnson has claimed he is currently hearing no noises that Chelsea are willing to extend the contract of one of their players.
He told The Athletic that this time last year there was a lot of talk that the club were desperate to renew Thiago Silva’s contract, however that is not currently the case this time around.
Silva in particular endured a rough afternoon as the Blues suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United at the weekend.
He made a notable error that allowed Anthony Gordon to smash the ball home, putting an end to any chance that Chelsea had in coming back into the game.
The Brazilian veteran has been an ever-present in the Premier League starting side this season, however this could be the last season that is the case.
Johnson has claimed that while he is a crucial player for Mauricio Pochettino right now, there are no noises surrounding a potential new contract for the centre-back, with his £110k-a-week deal ending this summer.
No talk of new Silva contract
He said: “It was just over a year ago that I asked him about his future before a game against AC Milan and there was a lot of talk from him and the club about wanting to renew. You are not hearing the same noises now and that’s significant.”
The Blues have a plethora of young, talented players coming through in that position that should be given opportunities this season to show they can be the future of the club.
Benoit Badiashile made his first league start of the season at the weekend, and it looks as if is time for him to form a regular partnership at the back with Levi Colwill, who had been a regular in the starting side until injury affected him recently.
