Speechless Margot Robbie is forced to communicate with hand movements as she loses her voice on the star studded Saltburn red carpet in LA

It’s been four months since she last walked the red carpet as the acting strike shut down Hollywood just days after the Barbie premiere in London.

But as Margot Robbie made her eagerly-anticipated return to the spotlight last night, she was missing one vital thing – her voice.

The Australian actress, 33, was back with a bang at the Los Angeles premiere of Saltburn, Emerald Fennell’s forthcoming psychological drama, but she was forced to communicate using hand gestures.

Letting her outfit do the talking, Ms Robbie, who has produced the film, starring Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi, wore a dark brown gown with a sheer corseted top and a full skirt.

She was unable to do interviews about her involvement in the film, gesturing to her throat and shrugging her shoulders when reporters tried to communicate with her.

Oh no: The Australian actress, 33, who was the producer on the psychological drama, was unable to stop to talk to anyone

Her representatives later confirmed that she had lost her voice and was unable to talk.

Ms Robbie, who jetted all over the world on the whirlwind Barbie press tour earlier in the year, posed next to British husband Tom Ackerley – a rare public appearance for the private couple.

They seemed to have even colour-coordinated their outfits, with filmmaker Ackerley wearing a light brown blazer to match his wife’s dress.

Their production company LuckyChap Entertainment is producing the eagerly-anticipated film, written and directed by Ms Fennell as her follow-up to Promising Young Woman.

Despite her apparent illness, Ms Robbie sported a healthy-looking tan following a summer holidaying with her husband in Greece.

The couple were joined on the red carpet by Ms Fennell, who wore a green cape dress, and Carey Mulligan – the star of her previous film – who wore a silver embellished skirt and a structured top with a plunging neckline.

British singer-songwriter Sophie Ellis-Bextor also graced the red carpet, after Ms Fennell decided to incorporate her 2001 hit Murder On The Dancefloor into the end of the film.

Rosamund Pike and Richard E Grant also star in the new film, about an Oxford student who goes to stay with his aristocratic classmate over the summer.

Actors and actresses are now able to promote their work again after acting union SAG-AFTRA finally reached a deal with studios following an historic 118-day strike.

Stars had been on the picket line since July, when the strike was called midway through the London premiere of Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Cast including Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt and Cillian Murphy were forced to leave the cinema and weren’t able to promote the film any further.

Just weeks before the strike was called, the Barbie cast and crew underwent a major promotional drive including a pink-filled London premiere.

Ms Robbie wore a series of specially-made outfits that were replicas of famous Barbie costumes from over the years.

In July, a resurfaced video shared to social media, taken in September 2022 showed Margot talking in sign language to a fan while at a premiere.

She appeared to say ‘nice to meet you’, to the fan before they posed for a photo together.

‘She’s amazing I love her,’ one user replied to the video. ‘This woman is literally perfect,’ another added. One fan said: ‘As if we needed another reason to love her!’

Many also praised the actress for going out of her way to speak to the fan.

Thomas Perry, who was the deaf fan of the star later gave MailOnline an insight into what really happened during their chat.

He admitted it was a dream come true to meet the Barbie actress and described her as very ‘down to Earth’, saying: ‘When I was at the premiere for Amsterdam, I was not nervous at all to meet her.

‘I thought wow she has no time to chat to many people, but we chatted for like three minutes. She is really down to Earth.’

He recalled how Margot had told him it was ‘nice to meet him’ before he replied with the sign for Neighbours – referencing her rise to fame on the Australian soap opera.

Thomas, who wanted to be an actor when he was a child, heaped praise on Margot and told how he hopes she ‘remembers’ their encounter.

He also admitted he was completely shocked when the video of their chat in sign language went viral, racking up a staggering 29.6million views online.

Thomas went on to reveal that his big ‘dream’ would be to walk on stage and present Margot with an Oscar for Best Actress as he shared his hopes that she wins the prize.

‘If she got an Oscar for Best Actress, I would walk on stage to give her the award, it would be my dream,’ he added.
