Roger Federer’s ex-coach Paul Annacone thinks the Holger Rune-Boris Becker partnership could be “a match made in heaven.” After spending a week of practice together in Monte Carlo, Rune and Becker officially confirmed their partnership last week.
“Look what’s the coaching situation is to me, it’s not always who it is, it’s the way they combine, so you really don’t know. This is, this should be a match made in heaven because of the way both of these guys go about their business.
But look, it’s a tricky situation right? Holger got a very strong parental figure in the picture. His mom has been there to help, she has been around helping him done a great job. Patrick Mouratoglou is now not in the picture, so there’s not a real simplistic kind of equation that you are gonna know if it’s gonna work or not until they do it for a bit.
See how the personalities match, see if there’s buy-in, see if there’s philosophy agreement and see if everybody can stand their lane and do what they are supposed to do,” Annacone said on Tennis Channel.

Rune hires Becker after moving on from coach Patrick Mouratoglou
Rune hiring Mouratoglou in late 2022 massively paid off when the 20-year-old Dane won his first Masters title in Paris and also broke into the top-10 for the first time in his career.
Rune also made several notable results in the first part of the 2023 season but then his form and results went downhill after Wimbledon. Following a shock US Open first-round loss to Roberto Carballes Baena – which was Rune’s fifth consecutive defeat at the time – the Dane announced he was ending his partnership with Mouratoglou.
This week in Basel, Rune is playing his first tournament with Becker in his box. After losing three consecutive matches, Rune finally got a win this week after beating Miomir Kecmanovic 1-6 7-5 6-3 in the Basel first round.
Rune hasn’t had much success over the last few months and it will be interesting to see if Becker can help the 20-year-old turn around his situation.
