Scott Minto has suggested that Chelsea should have bought someone better than Robert Sanchez during the summer.
The Blues signed Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion for £25m (BBC Sport) in the last transfer window and the goalkeeper has done a good job since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
But Scott Minto, speaking to the Daily Mirror, thinks his former club needed to buy a world-class No.1.
While Sanchez did concede four goals in the 4-4 draw with Manchester City, he made an excellent save against Erling Haaland, which Mark Schwarzer was quick to praise.
Chelsea need a world-class No.1
While Minto thinks Sanchez is a good goalkeeper, he wanted Chelsea to sign someone better than the Spaniard.
In an interview with the Daily Mirror, he said: “Robert Sanchez is a good goalkeeper but he was third-choice at Brighton and they didn’t buy a ready-made, world-class No.1, which was a mistake.”
Is Robert Sanchez good enough for Chelsea?
Right now, he is proving that he can play for a club like Chelsea. Again, that save he made against City was brilliant, while his shot-stopping in general has been pretty good.
According to FBref, Sanchez is in the top six Premier League goalkeepers for save percentage this season, registering a save percentage of 72.5%.
If this Chelsea team can evolve and become a title-challenging side, perhaps they will need to upgrade on some positions to go all the way.
For now, though, Champions League has to be the aim and from what Sanchez has shown this season, he looks good enough to help them accomplish that.
What could cost Chelsea is a lack of goals, though they have been way more clinical in their last couple of matches.
As well as scoring four against City, Mauricio Pochettino‘s men also put four past London rivals Tottenham Hotspur. If they lose that cutting edge, that is the thing that will be a problem for the team, not what is happening between their own sticks.
