One Piece: Who Is Ginny And Why Is She Important To Kuma?

Ginny looks to have played a huge part in Kuma’s past. Who was she, and what happened to her?

Ginny is a newly revealed character in One Piece chapter 1095 of the Final Saga. Her first appearance begins as a slave alongside the young Emporio Ivankov during the God Valley Incident, dating back 47 years before the Straw Hat Crew’s first arrival at Egghead Island. What little fans can discern from Ginny may reveal a great significance to Bartholomew Kuma and Jewelry Bonney.

Halfway through chapter 1095, readers are invited to a flashback of Kuma’s childhood. In this flashback, it’s revealed why the Rock Pirates were at God Valley and it introduces a young girl by the name of Ginny. Why Ginny, Ivankov, and Kuma were in God Valley and what happens after plays an important part in the history of One Piece.

What Happened to Kuma at God Valley?

It’s revealed in Kuma’s flashback that he became a slave at a very young age. Kuma is part of a near-extinct race known as the buccaneers, granting Kuma his large, barrel-chested, and bear-like appearance. Those endowed with buccaneer blood are given astonishing strength. This trait is likely what gave Celestial Dragons a particular interest in Kuma and his father. After his mother dies and his father is killed by a Celestial Dragon, Kuma is apparently sent to God Valley as game for the World Nobles, at which point he tries to escape and meets Ivankov and Ginny.

In One Piece chapter 1096, Ginny, Kuma, and Ivankav find themselves safe at the Sorbet Kingdom. With Kuma now equipped with the Paw Paw Devil Fruit, Ivankov leaves shortly after to enjoy his freedom, leaving Ginny and Kuma to fend for themselves. Ginny and Kuma work together chopping wood to sell and make a living. This is also where Kuma uses his Paw Paw Fruit powers to remove the pain from two bullies who were earlier beaten up by Ginny.

Why Haven’t Fans Heard About Ginny Until Now?

There’s very little that fans know about Ginny beyond what is revealed in these two chapters. There are no hitherto mentions or sightings of Ginny in the series. It’s clear that Ivankov knew Ginny long before Kuma, but he’s never mentioned her in the slightest.

In the most recent release of One Piece chapter 1097, Ginny, Ivankov, and Kuma all become part of the Revolutionary Army. The Revolutionary Army is a force, led by Luffy’s father Monkey D. Dragon, that seeks to dismantle the World Government and free those enslaved by the Celestial Dragons. With Kuma being a slave, it’s clear why he would join the Revolutionary Army, and Ginny’s relation with him may have led her to do the same. However, it’s also possible that life in the Revolutionary Army led to an unfortunate tragedy and Ginny is no longer alive. This could explain why no one has mentioned Ginny until now.

Is Ginny Bonney’s Mom?

Some speculation may lead readers to believe that Ginny is the mother of Jewelry Bonney. Bonny’s appearance throughout the series is often short, but the few times she is seen leading up to Egghead Island and the debut of Ginny may give readers enough to speculate about their relationship.

As readers know from earlier chapters, Jewelry Bonney is part of the Worst Generation alongside the Straw Hat crew and others. She is also the daughter of the human weapon Kuma. Her desire to free her father from the shackles put by Dr. Vegapunk and enslaved by World Nobles has led Bonney to Egghead Island. Bonney is first seen before the two-year timeskip.

At first glance, Ginny is a small, skinny girl with a big grin and fluffy hair. Her very first introduction shows her munching on meat, which parallels Bonney’s debut. Bonny and Ginny are frequently seen with food sticking out their mouths. Now, eating food isn’t nearly enough evidence to say that Ginny is Bonney’s mother, albeit it does strike similarities.

The real evidence likely comes from Ginny’s relation with Kuma. One Piece chapter 1097 shows an adult Ginny and Kuma. The two have been together for several decades now and their relationship has grown exponentially. Ginny even mentions that the two of them should get married. It’s very likely that Ginny and Kuma, before his submission to the World Government, led to the conception of Bonney.

While this is only speculative, this small lead may be enough to make the connection between Ginny and Bonney. It may take a few more chapters before readers get the full story about what happened to Ginny. Readers may even discover more about why Kuma allowed himself to become a human weapon known as a Pacifista.

Perhaps it has to do with the disappearance of Ginny. Or, maybe Kuma sacrificed himself to protect Bonny after losing Ginny to the Celestial Dragons. There are a lot of twists and turns in the series and Oda Eiichiro, the creator of One Piece, does have a habit of leaving hints for well-read fans.

One Piece is available to read via Viz Media. The series can be read on the Shonen Jump and the Manga Plus app.
