One of the most famous Hollywood couples of all time is Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn.
The Hollywood couple just celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary on Valentine’s Day and are still as devoted to one another as they were when they first got acquainted.
It’s impressive that neither one of them seems to have made a mistake despite the many temptations and pressures that come with being in the public eye. How many famous people get married, have children, and seem to be living happily ever after, only to break up a few years later?
The answer is a yes. Most of them, in fact.
But neither Kurt nor Goldie. In fact, they’ve set the example for happy marriages in Hollywood and raised a lovely family throughout the years.
So, why have they been so successful? However, according to the couple, it has a lot to do with marriage… or rather, the lack thereof.
Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are one of the few Hollywood couples to have earned the devotion and love of fans all over the world.
This couple has been together for almost 40 years, and it’s no small feat in a time when celebrities seem to trade partners like old shoes but they’ve been praised for both their acting chops and their genuine love for one another.
The unwavering commitment of Kurt and Goldie makes their love story unique and, we should say, believable to the general audience. They haven’t used their relationship to gain more attention, and they haven’t engaged in any scandals or publicity stunts to grab the reins of the media machine.
In contrast, their relationship is reminiscent of a simpler time, a model of mutual respect and affection that serves as a reminder of what true love is all about.
As of this past weekend, Goldie and Kurt have been married for 40 years. They’ve both achieved Hollywood stardom during that time, but they’ve also been able to maintain a strong marriage and devoted parenting.
The couple’s devotion to one another is laudable, but what makes their love story so fascinating is how it has evolved over the years.
During filming 1966’s The One and Only, Authentic Original Family Band, Goldie and Kurt first met. During a discussion on BBC Radio 4, Hawn discussed their encounter.
“I was 21 and he was 16,” Hawn said.
“I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young. Then, years later we met up again, and I remembered that I liked him very much when I first met him. We both said we would never go out with another actor so it just shows you never can tell.”
But, neither of them were prepared to take the next step and start dating just yet. And even though it looked like Goldie Hawn had it made at that point, she was having a tough time of it.
Reports claim that she secretly dealt with depression, an issue she never addressed in public.
Hawn discussed her history of mental health issues on the British talk show Good Morning Britain.
“When I was young, I became depressed. I was 21 and I was rising to success,” she said.
“I know it sounds terrible, but it’s a very, very difficult thing, I didn’t necessarily want that.”
In 1969, Goldie Hawn wed actor Gus Trikonis, but the pair divorced four years later. In June of 1976, she was finally able to get a divorce, and within a few short weeks she was wed to Bill Hudson for the next six years.
While filming Swing Shift in 1983, Russell and Hawn crossed paths once more.
This time, the charming and handsome Russell tried to impress Hawn with the pick-up line: “Man, you’ve got a great figure.”
“I was severely hungover and I didn’t know Goldie at all outside of having worked with her those many years before,” Russell said in a 2017 interview with Conan O’Brien.
“I just didn’t have in my mind what I was going to see, and she had a great body. So the first thing that came out was, ‘Man, you’ve got a great figure.’ It came out quickly and it could’ve gone wrong, and she said, ‘Why thank you.’”
Goldie was a married woman with two children from her marriage to Bill Hudson. Her children, Oliver, born on September 7, 1976, and Kate, born on April 19, 1979.
Kurt and Goldie have been together for 40 years, yet they still feel the same passionate love they had on their first date.
And what’s most intriguing about their friendship? Neither of them has ever considered getting a marriage license.
“For people like us, the marriage certificate wasn’t going to create anything that otherwise we wouldn’t have,” Russell told People.
“I don’t know – 40 years isn’t enough to finally say, ‘Well I guess…’”
Hawn added: “Our children got married … Oliver’s very happily married and Wyatt’s very happily married. Katie got married once and that didn’t work, and she’s with this most amazing human and I don’t know if she’ll marry again. The point is that we all tried marriage and sometimes marriage doesn’t work.
“It’s not about the marriage. It’s about the people and the relationship, and the will to stay together. And that’s a big one because if you want it, you can have it. You’ve got to give things up, but the joy and the excitement of being together and touching the toes of somebody at night is really a nice feeling.”
Whatever anyone else may say, Kurt and Goldie are a model pair in my book.
