Lyor Cohen, the global head of Music for Google and YouTube, named BLACKPINK’s Coachella debut stage as one of the most memorable performances and one of the most important moments on YouTube.

On April 4, Lyor Cohen was invited to speak on the popular Korean YouTube talk show MMTG and shared his insights about being in the music industry for nearly 40 years. Lyor has been a big part of the hip-hop world for over 30 years, working at different record labels. He began his career managing artists at Rush Productions, then moved up to lead Def Jam. After leaving Def Jam, he took an executive position at Warner Music Group. In September 2012, he left Warner to start his own label, 300 Entertainment. Then, in September 2016, he became the Global Head of Music at YouTube. During the interview, he invited JaeJae, the host of MMTG, to Coachella to interview the Korean artists who would be performing at Coachella.

He went on to share, “One of the most important moments for the YouTube team was when BLACKPINK was invited for the first time. We all came to support them. All the artists and all the celebrities were in front like this, (with their heads on their hands saying) ‘OMG.’ You could see the power of what Korea created.”

Lyor Cohen continued to express his admiration and explained, “That night they dropped the mic on everybody.”

Korean netizens were impressed how the global head of Music for Google and YouTube picked BLACKPINK’s debut performance at Coachella as one of the most important moments on YouTube.

Korean netizens commented, “I think the one thing YG did well was sending BLACKPINK to Coachella,” “BLACKPINK’s Coachella performance was legendary,” “I wish BLACKPINK goes to Coachella again in a few years,” “BLACKPINK is indeed legendary,” “That’s when I realized artists shine the most when they’re on stage,” “I’m so proud they are a K-pop group,” “This was the most perfect performance,” and “I agree BLACKPINK’s performance was legendary during Coachella.”
