One Piece: Is Gear 5 Luffy Too Overpowered?

Luffy might have become way too overpowered with his Gear 5 in One Piece.

After the events of the Wano Country arc, Luffy has now become a Yonko of the Sea, and, as is evident in the story right now, one of the strongest individuals in the New World. Defeating Kaido certainly meant that Luffy had now risen to a completely new level of power as well as infamy. This was rightfully reflected in his bounty, which shot up to 3 billion berries after the events of the Onigashima War.

Once the Straw Hat Pirates liberated Wano, they headed to Egghead, and on this island, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates have faced many other dangers as well. Luffy has had to take part in many high-level battles, and even right now, he is engaging in combat against a member of the Five Elders, Saturn, and remember of the Admirals, Kizaru. Luffy has had to prove his skill on every occasion, however, at the moment, many fans think that he might be a tad too overpowered.

Luffy’s Awakening Of The Gomu Gomu no Mi

Luffy attained incredible power recently, and much of that is down to the awakening of the Gomu Gomu no Mi. In the Wano Country arc, when Luffy was fighting against Kaido, his Devil Fruit finally awakened after the Yonko struck a killing blow. At that moment, Luffy’s heart appeared to have stopped beating, and, at the same time, his voice, which one could usually sense through Observation Haki, had gone out as well. Everyone, including Kaido himself, was certain that Luffy died.

However, that is when his Devil Fruit actually awakened and he was finally able to reach a completely new level of strength. Immediately after this Devil Fruit awakened, fans got to see what this power offered to him, and this ability was What came to be known as Gear 5. Gear 5 is certainly Luffy’s strongest power, and this ability sees him fight at his best. It gives Luffy an incredible buff, making him more rubbery than before, and boosting all his physical attributes to a sky-high level. At the same time, it allows him to fight with the most freedom, and bring his imagination to life. The only limitation to Luffy in Gear 5 is imagination. Thankfully, Luffy possesses boundless imagination, and that means that he is certainly one of the strongest individuals in the entire series, if not the strongest.

Once Luffy awakened his Devil Fruit, Kaido was no longer dominant against him in battle. Even though the Yonko was quite powerful, Gear 5 was simply too much for him to handle. Credit to him, he did manage to land a few hits on Luffy, however, at the end of the day, it proved to not be enough, and that is when Luffy eventually liberated Wano by crushing him and sending him crashing into an underground volcano. Since then, Luffy has left the land of Wano, and, on Egghead, he has used the power of Gear 5 on many occasions as well.

Has Luffy Gotten Stronger Since Wano?

Luffy has gotten quite strong ever since the conclusion of the Wano arc In fact, it is a given that after every arc, Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates get stronger than they were before. If Luffy fought Kaido right now, he would definitely win in a proper one-on-one as well, as that is just how the story works. The fact that Luffy has gotten only stronger since Wano is well reflected in the Egghead Island Arc. In this arc, Luffy has shown enough power to overwhelm even the likes of Admiral Kizaru.

When the Egghead arc began, Luffy utilized the power of Gear 5 against Lucci. It was quite clear that he was absolutely no match for the Yonko. In fact, Lucci did not even manage to land a single hit on Luffy, which just went on to show the incredible level that Luffy is on at the time. If that wasn’t enough, Luffy then took on Admiral Kizaru in battle. Kizaru is one of the strongest individuals in the One Piece world, and, it was quite clear for the fans to see that he was not a match for the Straw Hat pirate at all. It was clear to see that Luffy was not going all out and was actually holding back. Despite holding back, he was able to defeat him, which was rather surprising for the fans.

It was even more surprising that Luffy was able to take on both Kizaru and a member of the Five Elders, Saint Saturn, in combat, at the same time. Fans know these two to be some of the strongest in One Piece, yet, Luffy had no trouble dealing with them together. Saturn, who should be on the same level as the Admirals, and potentially even stronger, was not able to stand in combat against Luffy. Even these two individuals put together were not able to harm Luffy in combat, and that just goes to show that Luffy has reached an even higher level after the conclusion of the Wano Country arc.

Is Luffy Too Overpowered?

Many fans have wondered if Luffy is simply too overpowered after witnessing the developments of the Egghead Island arc. The fact is that Luffy is an individual who is capable of taking on a member of the Five Elders and an Admiral at the same time, and defeating both of them. This is an incredible level of power that has never been seen before in the One Piece world. What makes this even more shocking is the fact that Luffy still isn’t going all out. Fans know for a fact that Luffy is not utilizing any advanced form of Haki at this point in time. Above all, Luffy is not using his abilities to see the future, nor is he using the power of Conqueror’s Haki infusion, which is one of the strongest abilities to exist in the One Piece world.

Clearly, he has shown enough power in him to overwhelm the likes of an Admiral and a member of the Five Elders at the same time. The fact is that Luffy can potentially take on another individual of their strength tier in combat and still do exceedingly well. All this is to say that Luffy has simply reached an unprecedented level of strength, and he still has a lot of room to grow. Undoubtedly, Luffy is too overpowered right now, and he has gone from being the underdog in his battles, to dominating even individuals around the level of the Yonko.

While that is exciting, it only means that the enemies that Luffy will face later down the line are going to be even stronger. In particular, the likes of Blackbeard and Imu will likely have reached a much higher strength tier and they will showcase this power very soon in the Final Saga. In that sense, Luffy certainly is not too overpowered, as the enemies that he will have to fight are going to be that much stronger as well.
