Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino went with a back three for his side’s 2-2 draw with Brentford yesterday.
It saw Axel Disasi start on the right side of Chelsea‘s back three.
The Frenchman has played at right-back on a few occasions this season and, as a result, Jason Cundy believes the new role he was given at the Gtech Community Stadium should suit him. The former Blues defender shared his opinion while on commentary duty for the club’s official website (02/03/2024 at 15:18).
Chelsea took the lead in the first half after Nicolas Jackson scored a header.
However, the striker had a couple of good opportunities before that to put Mauricio Pochettino‘s side in front. He wasted one after trying to do some step overs, which drew criticism from Cundy.
Right side of a back three suits Axel Disasi
Cundy feels that playing on the right side of a three-man defence suits Disasi.
On the 25-year-old, he said: “It’s a slightly different role for him, playing right of a three, but we’ve seen him at right-back. It should suit his game.”

Whether Disasi starts in a back two or back three next time out, the France international has to improve.
Overall, Disasi has been pretty consistent this season and put in an excellent performance not too long ago against Manchester City. In fact, during that game, he made an incredible 16 clearances, according to WhoScored.
However, since then, the former AS Monaco man, who cost Chelsea £38.8m (Sky Sports), has been a bit sloppy.
For example, he was at fault for one of the goals the Blues conceded yesterday at the Gtech Community Stadium after some poor communication with goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic. With Pochettino’s men dropping further down the table, it is not the time of the season to be making mistakes like that.
