Who is Ice Spice? The American rapper you’re seeing all over the internet

It feels like you can hardly scroll these days without coming across an Ice Spice clip, pic or gif. Here’s what’s-what with this up-and-coming rapper

If you’ve been anywhere on the internet over the past year, you’ll have seen Ice Spice – even if you don’t know who Ice Spice is. Those ubiquitous ginger curls have been more present on Twitter than Elon Musk, her face seems automatically engineered to work with the TikTok algorithm, and last year her collaboration with PinkPantheress spawned a viral music video and earned the number three spot on Billboard’s Hot 100.

Ice Spice Teases New Song by Sharing Hilarious Viral Verse and Meme: ‘They Ain’t Even the Fart’

The hip-hop star shared a snippet of an unreleased track on social media on Sunday

Aside from social media, she’s also been dominating the media media, inspiring articles with headlines like Why Rapper Ice Spice Is Suddenly Everywhere (Time magazine), and Ice Spice, Hip Hop’s New Princess, Is Just Warming Up (the New York Times).

The rapper, 24, teased what appears to be an unreleased song by sharing a snippet of audio on social media on Sunday. Beyond giving her fans a taste of new music, though, the hip-hop star also went viral for pulling out one of the track’s funniest, most stand-out verses and making a meme out of it.

On Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), Ice posted her own version of the infamous meme of the Nintendo character Mario smoking marijuana with text of her latest, hilarious bar: “Bitches be thinking they the s—, but they ain’t even the fart.”

The post also included just over 30 seconds of a never-before-heard track.

Ice Spice Reveals Usher Was Her Celebrity Crush Growing Up: ‘Gorgeous Man’

Featuring a funk-inspired hip-hop beat, the “Deli” rapper begins the song with a playful back and forth between herself and her frequent producer RIOTUSA. “F— am I going to say in the intro? You want me to say something so bad,” she teases.

The stylishly-produced snippet, which toys with psychedelic sounds and an echo of Ice’s voice, then breaks into her cunning, yet very fun, new verses. “Think you the s—, bitch / You not even the fart,” she declares.

The remainder of the verse finds the “Princess Diana” artist touting how much she feels like she’s on another level. “I be going hard / I’m breaking they hearts, like / Bitches be quick but I’m quicker / Bitches be thick but I’m thicker / She could be rich but I’m richer (damn),” the star raps, concluding the tease of the track.

In the comments, the hitmaker’s collaborator RIOTUSA showed his support, posting several fire emojis in one reply and sharing his excitement for her hilarious new lyric in another. “THEY NOT EVEN THE FART 💨💯🔥,” he added.

The record producer, who has worked with Ice Spice on each of her solo releases to date, also hyped up the new track on X. He reshared the “Barbie World” rapper’s post previewing the song on the social platform and added, “🔥🔥🔥🔥.”

Ice Spice Calls Taylor Swift Her ‘Sis’ as Singer Praises Her Dedication: She ‘Impresses the Hell Out of Me’

Although the new music the Grammy-nominated performer teased on Instagram is currently undated, she’s expected to release her debut full-length album in 2024. To date, the rapper has only released a series of singles and the acclaimed Like..? EP since she broke out in late 2022 with the release of “Munch (Feelin’ U).”

RIOTUSA confirmed in a December interview with Billboard, though, that fans’ patience should pay off sometime this year. “… Look out for new classics with Ice in 2024,” he told the outlet. “We’re working on her debut album as we speak.”

In the meantime, the Bronx talent is up for her first-ever Grammys, including the coveted best new artist award. She received three other nominations, as well: best pop/group duo performance for teaming up with Taylor Swift on the “Karma” remix, best rap song and best song written for visual media for her collaboration with Nicki Minaj off the Barbie soundtrack, “Barbie World.”
