Astronomer Have Discovered A Mysterious Object, Which Is 570 Billion Times Brighter Than The Sun

So bright that it pushes the energy limit of physics.

Billions of light years away, there is a giant ball of hot gas that is brighter than hundreds of billions of suns. It is hard to imagine something so bright. So what is it? Astronomers are not really sure, but they have a couple theories.

They think it may be a very rare type of supernova — called a magnetar — but one so powerful that it pushes the energy limits of physics, or in other words, the most powerful supernova ever seen as of today.

This object is so luminous that astronomers are having a really difficult time finding a way to describe it. “If it really is a magnetar, it’s as if nature took everything we know about magnetars and turned it up to 11,” said Krzysztof Stanek, professor of astronomy at Ohio State University and the team’s co-principal investigator, comedically implying it is off the charts on a scale of 1 to 10.The object was first spotted by the All Sky Automated Survey of Supernovae (ASAS-SN or “assassin”), which is a small network of telescopes used to detect bright objects in the universe. Although this object is ridiculously bright, it still can’t be seen by the naked eye because it is 3.8 billion light years away.

ASAS-SN, since it began in 2014, has discovered nearly 250 supernovae, however this discovery, ASASSN-15lh, stands out because of its sheer magnitude. It is 200 times more powerful than the average supernova, 570 billion times brighter than the sun, and 20 times brighter than all the stars in the Milky Way Galaxy combined.

“We have to ask, how is that even possible?” said Stanek. “It takes a lot of energy to shine that bright, and that energy has to come from somewhere.”

Todd Thompson, professor of astronomy at Ohio State, has one possible explanation. The supernova could have generated an extremely rare type of star called a millisecond magnetar — a rapidly spinning and very dense star with a crazy strong magnetic field.

This is how crazy magnetars are: to shine as bright as it does, this magnetar would have to spin at least 1,000 times a second, and convert all of that rotational energy to light with pretty much 100 percent efficiency — making it the most extreme example of a magnetar that is physically possible.

Given those constraints,” Thompson said, “will we ever see anything more luminous than this? If it truly is a magnetar, then the answer is basically no.”

Over the coming months, the Hubble Space Telescope will try to solve this mystery by giving astronomers time to see the host galaxy surrounding this object. The team may find that this bright object lies in the very center of a large galaxy — meaning the object is not a magnetar at all — and the gas around it is actually evidence of a supermassive black hole.

If that is the case, then the bright light could be explained by a new kind of event, said study co-author Christopher Kochanek, professor of astronomy at Ohio State. It would be something that has never, ever been seen before at the center of a galaxy.

Whether it is a magnetar, a supermassive black hole, or something else entirely, the results are probably going to lead to new thinking about how objects form in the universe.

A female fire brigade worker has sued for harassment after her male boss made a remark about his wife having a Mulberry handbag just like hers. Tayba Amber accused Martin McCarthy of being a ‘𝑠e𝑥ual predator’ after his comment during a meeting about her return to work from sick leave, an employment tribunal heard. After noticing the high-end fashion accessory, he asked her if she would later be going to the Mulberry shop – where bags can cost more than £1,500 – and said he had spent a ‘considerable amount of money’ on handbags for his wife.

Brit faces 25 years in ‘hell hole’ Dubai prison after ‘accepting £3,000 cash to go shopping’: Crypto investor says police ‘laughed that I was going to get the DEATH PENALTY’

A British man faces 25 years in a Dubai prison after he accepted money ‘to go shopping’ from an alleged drug dealer. Self-proclaimed millionaire Waseem Khan, 22, spent over two months locked in a ‘hell hole’ cell with 200 inmates at the notorious Al Barsha jail before he was released on bail following his arrest. The crypto investor – who has been forced to shell out £30,000 on legal fees – was detained on September 4 when police raided his luxury apartment.

How Labour has been hammered in council elections during Keir Starmer’s disastrous first five months… as petition for new Westminster poll creeps towards 2.8m signatures

Labour’s plunge in popularity since the election has been laid bare in an analysis of council contests. Keir Starmer’s candidates have won just 53 of the 150 seats up for grabs on local authorities since July 4 – having previously held 75. Meanwhile, the Tories have boosted their tally by 21 to 44, and Reform have gained  five.

Keir Starmer refuses to say taxes won’t rise AGAIN during PMQs clashes despite Rachel Reeves making the vow to business – as Labour’s Budget descends deeper into shambles

Sir Keir Starmer today refused to say that taxes will not rise again despite Rachel Reeves making the pledge to business. In bad-tempered clashes at PMQs, the premier insisted he was ‘not going to write the next five years of Budgets right here at this despatch box’. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch swiped that the burden would inevitably rise again under Labour – and also goaded Sir Keir over millions of Brits signing a petition demanding a fresh general election.

Iconic butchers say ‘it is sad for London and a nightmare for us’ as historic meat market is set to close after 900 years

Butchers at Smithfield Market told of their devastation today as City bosses took the decision to close the world’s oldest meat market after 900 years at the heart of London life. Traders at the iconic English institution, which will close along with Billingsgate fish market – itself established in 1850 – described the move as a ‘sad day’ for the capital and a ‘nightmare’ for them personally. Butcher Joe Howgate, 25, told MailOnline: ‘It’s been here for 800 or 900 years, it’s not nice the corporation has said “it’s done”. It’s sad for London, there is a lot of history here, it’s a long time and for them to say ‘‘that’s it, we’re going to call it a day’’ is sad and unusual.’

Britain’s car industry is in crisis due to lack of demand for electric cars, warns boss of Ford – as she demands incentives to convince drivers to switch from petrol or diesel motors

Britain’s car industry is in crisis due to a lack of demand for electric cars, the boss of Ford’s UK arm has warned. Lisa Brankin, the chairman and managing director of Ford UK, called for the Government to urgently introduce ‘incentives’ such as tax breaks to convince drivers to switch away from petrol and diesel. She said Ford has invested ‘significantly’ in the production and development of EVs, with ‘well over’ £350million invested around electrification in the UK, adding: ‘So we kind of need to make it work.’
