Pouring dishwashing liquid into the toilet. The secret I wish I had known earlier.
When you have a clogged toilet, you feel a sense of urgency that is unmatched by the knowledge that the water in the toilet is just a few seconds away from bursting onto your floor. Fortunately, plungers are made to prevent that from happening, but what happens if you grab for one and it disappears?
Our good news is that if you have dish soap and really hot water available, you have one more chance to remove the obstruction before contacting a plumber, even if you’re not particularly confident with plungers.
How to Use Dish Soap to Clear a Severe Clogged Toilet
This is how to unclog your toilet with dish soap.
What You’ll require:
- Water
- Pot
- Dish Soap
What You’ll Do Is This:
- Place a gallon of water in a saucepan and place it on the stove. It should be really heated but not boiling. (Hey, boiling water can break the toilet bowl!)
- Fill the toilet bowl with at least half a cup of dish soap, then leave it there while you heat up the water on the stove.
- Watch as the soap works to clear the clogged toilet as you carefully pour the gallon of really hot water into the bowl. Turn off the water valve (found behind the toilet on the floor) if you’re concerned that there will be too much water in the bowl after you try to flush it.
As unbelievable as it may seem, it truly does work!
The blockage might not come out for up to fifteen minutes. You can flush after that to check whether it has cleaned. You will probably need to call a plumber if you don’t see any motion after that.
