Her divorce from Brad Pitt dominated headlines in 2016.
And Angelina Jolie has revealed she leaned on her six children for support in the years that followed the difficult break-up.
‘My strength is from my children’, she told Studio 10 while on the red carpet at the Tokyo premiere of Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
‘Anyone who’s a parent knows that there’s a strength within you that grows,’ she said, adding that she always strives to be strong for her children so she can ‘pull them through anything.’
Angelina was joined at the event by her 14-year-old daughter Zahara and her 18-year-old son Maddox, who flew over from South Korea, where he is attending college.
It comes after Angelia told French magazine Madame that she ‘lost herself a bit’ after splitting from Brad, and admitted she didn’t even ‘recognise’ herself anymore.
She said: ‘I don’t know what my fate holds but what I am convinced of is that I am in a period of transition, like a return to my roots, a return to myself. Because I had lost myself a bit.
‘I think it happened as my relationship with Brad was coming to an end, then at the beginning of our separation.
‘It was a complicated moment, where I didn’t recognise myself anymore, where I had become… how can I say… smaller, almost insignificant, even if it wasn’t necessarily visible.’
The Tomb Raider star confessed she felt a ‘deep and genuine sadness’ when her marriage fell apart, but it was also an opportunity to learn about herself.
‘It was interesting to reconnect with this humility and even this insignificance I was feeling,’ she said. ‘Maybe this is what being human is in the end?
‘On top of all this, I suffered some health issues. All these things settle in you and remind you of how lucky you are of being alive.’
