Alan Pardew thinks Chelsea selling Marc Guehi to Crystal Palace was a mistake.
Marc Guehi left Chelsea for Crystal Palace in 2021 and has quickly become one of the best central defenders in the Premier League.
For Alan Pardew, who was speaking on talkSPORT, Chelsea allowing the 23-year-old to leave the club was a huge error in judgement.
It seems some at Chelsea also share that sentiment, with Guehi actually being linked with a move back to Stamford Bridge.
Alan Pardew thinks Chelsea have made a big mistake with Marc Guehi
According to Pardew, Guehi would be playing every week for Chelsea if he were still at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking about the centre-half on talkSPORT, the former Premier League manager said: “They’ve let some great young players go, by the way. Crystal Palace’s best player is an ex-Chelsea player. He’s absolutely brilliant.
“I mean, he would play every week for Chelsea, no doubt, absolutely no doubt. There’s not just players coming in that have made errors, they’ve made errors in releasing players too.”
Did Chelsea make a mistake by selling Marc Guehi to Crystal Palace?
Without a doubt, but it is all hindsight now. They had good centre-back options at the time, the likes of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, while they probably did not expect Guehi to develop into the defender that he is today.
Palace are not having a great season under Roy Hodgson, but Guehi continues to shine at Selhurst Park.
His average of 4.5 clearances per game is actually the second highest in the Eagles’ squad (WhoScored) and is just a snippet of what he brings to the defence.
Again, there is no doubt that Guehi is now one of the leading defenders in the country, while he has slowly become quite an important member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
Chelsea got this one wrong, but maybe they will correct things by re-signing their former academy player next year.
