Zahara Jolie-Pitt is now a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha — the first historically Black sorority — at Spelman College in Atlanta.
In a video posted to social media by Essence, the college sophomore can be seen declaring herself during the sorority’s induction ceremony this week, shouting her name to a cheering crowd.
“My name is Zahara Marley Jolie,” she told her new sisters. “And [I] landed all the way from the Golden State in the city full of angels: Los Angeles, California.”
The 18-year-old daughter of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt — whose contentious divorce has been going on for years now — appeared to leave off her father’s last name when participating in the ceremony, prompting social media users to take notice.
“Peep how she claims the Jolie name and NOT Pitt, love to see it,” wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user, to which another added, “Maddox, Pax, and Zahara all wanted to change their names to Jolie but out of respect she told them to keep Pitt.”
Other users applauded Jolie for encouraging Zahara to attend a historically Black college or university (HBCU).
Zahara enrolled in Spelman in fall 2022. “Zahara with her Spelman sisters! Congratulations to all new students starting this year. A very special place and an honor to have a family member as a new Spelman girl,” Jolie wrote in an Instagram post announcing her daughter’s decision.
