The back cover art for the series’ 22nd volume showcases a contemplative Broly sitting beneath the book’s text. Seen in his typical training costume, Broly is in his normal, non-Super Saiyan form. The volume’s front cover has already been revealed, which features Gohan, Pan, Piccolo, Cell Max and Androids Gamma 1 and Gamma 2. Currently, the volume is set for release in Japan on Dec. 4, 2023, although the schedule for the English localization is unknown. Volume 21 of the Dragon Ball Super manga was released in Japan on Aug. 4, but it won’t hit Western shelves until May 14th, 2024.

Dragon Ball Super is currently in the “Super Hero Saga,” which adapts the movie Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The main crux of the story involves the remnants of the Red Ribbon Army from the original Dragon Ball attempting to strike at Gohan and Piccolo via the misguided Androids Gamma 1 and 2. All the while, Broly, Vegeta and Goku continue to train on Beerus’ planet. This is the latest official manga adaptation of one of the Dragon Ball Super movies, although the content of Dragon Ball Super: Broly was mostly skipped.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly was an official canon retelling of Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan. Conversely, the movies for Dragon Ball Z were not canon with the anime or the manga, despite characters such as Broly becoming incredibly popular. Dragon Ball Super: Broly brought him into the current canon, albeit somewhat reinterpreted compared to his original characterization.

While the manga that was adapted into both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z anime ended in 1995, the anime hit its zenith of international popularity during the early 2000s. The manga for Dragon Ball Super did not begin until 20 years later, with its anime counterpart also beginning in the middle of 2015. Dragon Ball Super is written by series creator Akira Toriyama, with art supplied by Toyotarou. As an official sequel to the events of Dragon Ball Z, it replaced the non-canon Dragon Ball GT and has been far more well-received. The anime adaptation of Super ended in 2018, but the manga is still going strong. A new anime titled Dragon Ball Daima has also been announced and is set for release in Fall 2024.
