Lewis Hamilton Reveals Regret Over Declining Role in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’: ‘It Could’ve Been Me’

Lewis Hamilton Ventures into Hollywood with Formula 1 Movie

Renowned racing icon Lewis Hamilton is set to embark on a new chapter in his career by venturing into Hollywood as a producer for Joseph Kosinski’s upcoming Formula 1 movie, which features Brad Pitt in a starring role.

However, Hamilton’s journey into the world of cinema almost took a different turn years earlier when he had the opportunity to collaborate with Kosinski on a blockbuster project.

“I will even be a janitor,” Hamilton said to Cruise when they would discuss the prospect of a second “Top Gun” movie. “Just let me be in it.”

In a recent interview with GQ, Hamilton revealed his longstanding friendship with Tom Cruise and his aspirations to be part of a potential “Top Gun” sequel. He eagerly expressed his willingness to take on any role, even that of a janitor, in the iconic franchise.

When the opportunity arose during the pre-production of “Top Gun: Maverick,” Cruise extended an offer for Hamilton to join the cast as a pilot. However, Hamilton’s packed racing schedule and lack of acting experience led him to decline the offer, a decision he later regretted upon seeing the final film.

“Firstly, I hadn’t even had, like, an acting lesson,” he said. “And I don’t want to be the one that lets this movie down. And then secondly, I just really didn’t have the time to dedicate to it. I remember having to tell Joe and Tom — and it broke my heart. And then I regretted it, naturally, when they show me the movie and it’s: It could’ve been me!”

Reflecting on his missed opportunity with “Top Gun: Maverick,” Hamilton expressed his desire to ensure authenticity in his Hollywood endeavors. He emphasized the importance of accurately representing the world of Formula 1 to appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

As an executive producer of the untitled Formula 1 movie, Hamilton is dedicated to ensuring that the film captures the essence of the racing league, drawing upon his expertise and passion for the sport to advise the filmmakers on realistic portrayals and narratives.

“My point was: Guys, this movie needs to be so authentic. There’s two different fan groups that we have — like, the old originals, who from the day they’re born hearing the Grand Prix music every weekend and watching with their families, to the new generation that just learned about it today through Netflix,” he said.

“I felt my job really has been to try to call BS. ‘This would never happen.’ ‘This is how it would be.’ ‘This is how it could happen.’ Just giving them advice about what racing is really about and what, as a racing fan, would appeal and what would not.”

Hamilton’s foray into Hollywood not only showcases his versatility and ambition but also underscores his commitment to bringing authenticity and integrity to the projects he associates with. As he navigates his dual roles as a racing superstar and a burgeoning Hollywood producer, Hamilton continues to push boundaries and make an indelible mark on both the racing world and the silver screen.
