Johansson, the daughter of an architect and a producer, was reared in New York City. She and her identical brother, Hunter, were the youngest of four children. At a young age, she became interested in acting, and by the time she was seven, she was doing commercial auditions. She then quickly joined the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute and later went to the Professional Children’s School in Manhattan to further her training. At the age of eight, she co-starred with Ethan Hawke in the Off-Broadway show Sophistry, and at the age of nine, she made her feature film debut in Rob Reiner’s North (1994). Later, Johansson appeared in Just Cause (1995), but Manny & Lo (1996), a coming-of-age drama about two orphaned sisters who fled away, was her big break. She then received praise from the critics for her performance.

Johansson found her niche in characters that required greater maturity, such as the disillusioned Charlotte in the 2003 drama Lost in Translation, played by Bill Murray, and Griet, a housekeeper in the historical drama Girl with a Pearl Earring, played by Colin Firth, who charms painter Johannes Vermeer (2003). Then she made a well-received appearance in filmmaker Woody Allen’s Match Point in 2005, and she went on to star in his subsequent flicks (Scoop, 2006) and Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008). She and Ewan McGregor co-starred in The Island, a high-profile action film released in 2005.
