Wayne Rooney admits Alejandro Garnacho’s Man United bicycle kick goal was ‘BETTER’ than his but insists iconic derby strike was ‘bigger’ for the club

Wayne Rooney has labelled Alejandro Garnacho‘s bicycle kick goal against Everton earlier in the season as ‘better’ than his famous acrobatic strike in the Manchester derby.

Garnacho set United on their way to victory at Goodison Park earlier in the season by scoring a goal-of-the-season contender with a now-iconic overhead strike.

The Argentinian’s outstanding effort was immediately compared to Rooney’s legendary finish for United against Man City 13-years ago.

Rooney – United’s record goalscorer – stunned Old Trafford on that day in the Manchester derby and has now given his verdict on Garnacho’s strike against his boyhood Toffees team.

The former England captain was covering United’s Premier League clash against Everton on Saturday and praised Garnacho for producing the ‘better goal’.

Rooney and former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand discussed which goal was better

Rooney’s standout goal came off his shin before sailing past then-City goalkeeper Joe Hart and the 38-year-old hailed Garnacho for making a cleaner connection with his effort.

‘I’ve always said it’s harder to score with your shin than your foot, harder technique to do so. Bit of both shin and foot. Garnacho’s was better.

‘A goals a goal, I think Rio is right, the technique on that is incredible.

‘His was a better goal, better technique definitely, I think mine was the bigger goal,’ he added.

Rooney starred during his celebrated career at United where he won the Champions League and became a serial Premier League and domestic cup title holder.

Garnacho’s goal-of-the-season contender previously stunned Everton in November last year

He ended his 13-year-stint at the club after making 559 appearances and scoring 253 goals before moving back to Everton and eventually departing English football.

Rooney’s former United and England team-mate Rio Ferdinand also joined in on comparing the two incredible goals and agreed Garnacho’s strike was better.

‘I thought the technique was better because Wayne’s came off his shinpad, you admit it was? Was it off your shinpad or not,’ he stated.

‘The connection and contact he gets on it is a little bit cleaner that’s all it is but the magnitude of this game sets Wayne’s on a different level.’
