Insider reveals expectation for LeBron James’ future with Lakers

LeBron James has a $51.4 million player option on his contract for next season. Given the Los Angeles Lakers’ struggles, there have been questions surrounding the veteran superstar’s future with the Purple and Gold.

When speaking on a recent episode of “The HoopsHype Podcast,” The Athletic’s Jovan Buha shared his belief that LeBron will remain with the Lakers for at least one more season.

“To me, LeBron has so much left in the tank that I think he’s going to play next season and play another two or three more years,” Buha said. “He has roots here in L.A. His other son, Bryce, is playing in high school out here and his family is out here in LA. You’d be giving up money and a lifestyle to go somewhere else and try to win a fifth ring.”

LeBron will be entering his age-40 season when his player option kicks in. Yet, he is still among the best players in the world. This season, he is averaging 24.8 points, 7.2 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game, shooting 52% from the field and 39.1% from three-point range.

If he can avoid injury, LeBron can likely remain toward the top tier of NBA players for the remainder of his career. As such, the Lakers will likely continue looking for ways to keep their star forward happy. Part of that may be finding a way to acquire Bronny James when he enters the NBA, be that via draft or trade.

The best way to convince LeBron to remain with the franchise is to contend for a championship. He has made no secret of his desire to continue building his legacy. The Lakers got to the Western Conference Finals last season. That should be the goal again this year, at which point they can begin to dream of making it to the NBA Finals.

As long as he’s an active player in the league, LeBron’s future will be a hot topic. Yet, with his roots firmly planted in Los Angeles, it’s hard to envision him going elsewhere for the final chapter of his career. It makes more sense that he will retire as a Laker or sign a 10-day deal to retire with the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat whenever that day comes.
