Tottenham becomes London’s wealthiest club in Deloitte’s Football Money League, thanks to hosting NFL games and concerts featuring artists like Beyonce.

Tottenham have overtaken Chelsea to become the richest club in London in the latest Deloitte Football Money League.

As previously reported, Real Madrid topped the rankings after earning £723m in revenue for the 2022-23 season – jumping ahead of Manchester City, with Paris Saint-GermainBarcelona and Manchester United rounding off the top five.

The rankings show that Tottenham have leapfrogged Chelsea to become the eighth richest club in the world with annual revenues of £549.2m – with the earning power of their stadium playing a huge part.

Chelsea (£512.5m) and Arsenal (£463.1m) round off the top 10, while West Ham (£240m) come in at 18th.

Spurs have benefitted from increased matchday revenue, as well as hosting a range of events outside of football, including the NFL and concerts by artists including Beyonce.

Tottenham also generate around £105m-per-season in matchday income

During the 2022-23 season, Tottenham hosted NFL matches between the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints, as well as the New York Giants and Green Bay Packers.

Music superstar Beyonce meanwhile played at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for five nights – in which a staggering 238,000 fans were in attendance across all shows.

Other giants of the music industry including Pink, Lady Gaga and Guns N’ Roses also played at the stadium.

As reported by The Times, Tottenham also earn more than £105m-per-season in matchday income.

The Money League looks at revenue figures reported in clubs’ annual accounts for the 2022-23 season and does not look at operating costs.

Revenue figures in the list do not include player sales so the £100m generated from Harry Kane’s transfer to Bayern Munich did not affect the club’s revenue – though it will have improved their profit.

Sam Boor, a director in Deloitte’s Sport Business Group, said: ‘A huge reason for Tottenham’s growth is the club being able to fully leverage and monetise the stadium, both in terms of the match-day income and the commercial activities.

‘The broadcast income from Uefa for being in the Champions League last season has also helped them move up the rankings. Match-day income is one of the big differences, though, and Chelsea are looking to redevelop their stadium, which remains an issue.’

Tottenham have jumped ahead of Chelsea in the rankings, with Arsenal rounding off the top 10

Tottenham and Chelsea switched places compared to last year, with Spurs up one place to eighth, while Arsenal held on to 10th position.

Liverpool have had the biggest fall of any club in the top 20, from third place down to seventh, after Deloitte found their revenue had dropped slightly from £594.3million to £593.8m.

Real Madrid led the way, demonstrating the club are doing well out of European football’s current eco-system, despite their president Florentino Perez being arguably the most staunch advocate for a Super League.
