This month, Chelsea was really hoping to send the 21-year-old to a different loan team.

Chelsea allowed David Datro Fofana to join Burnley on loan this month after recalling him from Union Berlin.

David Datro Fofana‘s initial loan spell at Union Berlin was cut short after his struggles there, giving Burnley the opportunity to swoop in and snap him up.

However, Matt Law of The Telegraph has now told London Is Blue that both Chelsea and the striker’s people had a preferred destination in mind that was not Turf Moor.

Fofana made 12 appearances in the Bundesliga during his time in Germany, managing to score just once.

Chelsea wanted David Datro Fofana to join Sevilla

According to Law, Chelsea and those close to Fofana were keen for him to join Sevilla.

Discussing the 21-year-old’s loan move to Burnley, the journalist said: “Chelsea used up their last overseas loan place by sending Ian Maatsen over to Borussia Dortmund. I still thought that there was a chance they would try and create a space by moving people around a little bit.

“But having spoken to people involved literally, they really wanted to do the Sevilla move. I think that was the first choice of sort of the club to start with and also Datro Fofana’s people.”

Burnley still a good move for David Datro Fofana

All things considered, Fofana ending up at Burnley instead of Sevilla probably works out better for Chelsea.

The Clarets are obviously a Premier League side; the Ivorian can gain some much-needed experience playing in the division, which should help him in the future.

Chelsea signed Fofana last January, but he has only made three appearances in English football’s top flight so far. Hopefully it is a much different story at Turf Moor.

As well as Fofana, as Law mentioned, Chelsea have also allowed Ian Maatsen to join Dortmund on loan for the remainder of the campaign. He is likely to depart permanently eventually, though, with the Blues reportedly confident that a £35m release clause in his contract will be triggered.
