This poignant moment was recorded on tape as Trent Alexander-Arnold was appointed to the post of vice-captain at Liverpool by Jurgen Klopp, making him Virgil van Dijk’s understudy

Trent Alexander-Arnold cut an emotional figure as he beamed after being told by Jurgen Klopp that he would be Liverpool‘s new vice-captain.

The 24-year-old was named as the club’s new deputy leader on Monday as Virgil van Dijk was appointed first-team captain after Jordan Henderson vacated the armband.

Van Dijk will take on the main captaincy duties and will be supported in the position by Alexander-Arnold as the two defenders take up new leadership roles at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold is a childhood Liverpool supporter, rising through the club’s ranks before eventually cementing his place in the first-team, and appeared moved as he was told by Klopp of his decision.

The Liverpool manager pulled the England international to one side as the team warmed up prior to kick-off in their penultimate pre-season clash in Singapore against Leicester.

Heart-warming footage was posted showing the moment Trent Alexander-Arnold was named Liverpool’s new vice-captain

Klopp then placed his arm around an unawares Alexander-Arnold and encouraged the right-back to walk across the pitch with him inside the Singapore National Stadium as a conversation got underway.

The German boss then engages in discussion as he explains his decision before stopping, placing his arms on Alexander-Arnold’s head and pulling the player in for a hug.

Klopp was most likely outlining the duties and responsibilities that his new vice-captain would be tasked with as the duo embraced with Alexander-Arnold then nodding in agreement with his boss.

The conversation ends with both clearly delighted with the outcome as Klopp and the Liverpool star clap hands before going their separate ways.

Alexander-Arnold played the first-half of the pre-season encounter as Liverpool ran out 4-0 victors against their Championship opponents in Asia.

The Liverpool-born Champions League and Premier League winner published a simple appreciation post on social media, stating: ‘We’re ready’ alongside a picture of him and Van Dijk.

Liverpool get their Premier League campaign underway against Chelsea on August 13.
