Super Saiyan Blue is the level achieved after having the power of Super Saiyan God and transforming it into Super Saiyan state.
Let’s take a trip to the past together, to the moment Dragon Ball Super decided to give Goku a new look.
Akira Toriyama, the author behind this story revealed something surprising. It turns out that creating Super Saiyan Blue is actually quite simple.
It all started with the movie Dragon Ball: Battle of Gods, where we first saw the transformation into the Super Saiyan God.
The beginning of everything
Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods not only introduced incredible characters like the God of Destruction Beerus and the Angel Whis, but also paved the way for a vast and exciting cosmology.
With powerful enemies about to appear, Goku needs an upgrade. And so the Super Saiyan God appeared, with a design very similar to Goku’s basic form, but with a notable change in hair color. Then there was Super Saiyan Blue and Toriyama talked about it in an interview.
Reasons for choosing blue
Now the big question: “Why was blue chosen for the new upgraded transformation technique of the Saiyans?”. Toriyama’s explanation is both interesting and simple. In an interview, he said: “In Battle of the Gods it’s red, so I thought I should choose the opposite color: blue. That’s it (laughs). Well, actually I was planning on making it to white, but that color will contrast with the “next enemy”… so I think I should save it for another time (laughs).”
Toriyama’s explanation is both interesting and simple. The author shared that after using the color red in Super Saiyan God, he decided blue would be a suitable choice for the next film. Toriyama even joked that he considered white but decided to save that color for a future villain.
Super Saiyan Blue, or Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, is a direct evolution of Super Saiyan God. The user achieves the Super Saiyan Blue state once in God form. As a result, there was a significant change in appearance, with his hair still in the Super Saiyan style but with a vibrant new color.
In addition, Toriyama also revealed a little secret, the author almost chose white for this transformation. However, when thinking about the villain in the Future Trunks arc, he decided that white would be more suitable for another occasion. The silver gray color of Ultra Instinct is seen later, possibly as a nod to this original idea.
After his debut, Super Saiyan Blue became one of the most powerful and iconic forms in the series. Goku and Vegeta adopted this form as an essential part of their arsenal, leaving the classic Super Saiyan transformations aside. It’s interesting to think that such a random decision by Toriyama led to a new level of power in the Dragon Ball Super universe.
