Rom-coms are back. Hollywood star Sydney Sweeney’s recently-released film is on the charts when fans hadn’t expected it. Anyone but You hit theatres on 22nd December and is performing surprisingly well, having surpassed its budget already. Earlier, the movie was getting quite some criticism for its plotline, and lack of comedy.

However, over a week after its release, the Will Gluck-directed film is raising eyebrows with its numbers. News surfaced that Anyone but You has made a decent global income until now, breezing past its $25 million budget, making it a commercially successful film.

Sydney Sweeney’s new movie is far from getting bombed

Starring alongside Top Gun: Maverick actor, Glen Powell, and the 26-year-old actress play each other’s love interests, Ben and Bea respectively. The rom-com unfolds into a wedding-themed plot, where the couple try to reignite their spark that life’s mundanity has dimmed. According to Box Office Mojo, Anyone but You opened with a domestic $6 million, which surged to $11 million by New Year’s long weekend.

Overall, the film has collected over $30 million worldwide and $27 million in the U.S. The R-rated was initially subject to scrutiny by fans, with many criticizing the poor direction, and comedy-lacking script, per IMDb. Anyone but You received mixed reviews but the numbers seem encouraging.

A post by Film Updates on X announced that the Sydney Sweeney-starrer is profitable, with an engrossing picture of the star attached to the post. Despite the stiff competition with other movies like Wonka, Aquaman 2, and more, Anyone but You has managed to establish its individuality at the box office.

The movie’s success is a testament to the fact that box office success is unpredictable. The profits solely depend on the viewers’ choices and ongoing trends. For now, it seems romantic comedies are making their way back into people’s hearts.

Sydney Sweeney’s steps into the world of rom-com

Sydney Sweeney starred in multiple films before making her way into the rom-com genre. In 2018’s Along Came the Devil, the actress portrayed the possessed teenager whereas in 2019’s Clementine, she played an aspiring actress. Her most recent work was in HBO’s Euphoria, where she played the scandalous Cassie Howard. Shifting from her usually dramatic portrayals, Sweeney’s Bea was referred to as a “nightmare” by Powell at the CinemaCon 2023, per People.

Anyone but You features Bea and Ben as college rivals who hate each other, but eventually fall in love. Therefore, the film attempts to paint a picture of the thin line that exists between hate and love. With former films like Friends with Benefits and Easy A, Will Gluck knows how to get his work done. Other cast members of Anyone but You include Dermot Mulroney, Rachel Griffiths, Alexandra Shipp, and Michelle Hurd, among others.
