Stan Wawrinka, Marcelo Rios, Marat Safin, Grigor Dimitrov and many others have all benefited from the Swede’s expertise.

However, it was under Lundgren’s tutelage that legendary Swiss ace Federer won the first of his 20 majors.

The pair worked together when Federer lifted the 2003 Wimbledon championship.

He also played a key role in helping Russian Marat Safin to secure the 2005 Australian Open championship.

However, now Lundgren, who was a former tennis pro himself in his younger days before retiring in 1995, has suffered a severe health setback.

He took to his Facebook page to break the news that his left leg has been amputated.

Posting a photo of himself in a hospital bed, it showed that what is left of his left leg was covered in bandages while the foot was missing.

He then revealed to shock fans that he had recently undergone foot amputation due to an infection.

A broken ankle had failed to heal properly, which could have been exacerbated by his type 2 diabetes, which can impede circulation around the legs.

Lundgren wrote: “I was going to give an update on my foot.

“Unfortunately, I had to amputate my foot and a bit up 10 days ago and because of the infection I had and my broken ankle did not heal because of my type 2 diabetes you get bad circulation.

“But now I feel well again and soon my rehab will begin.”
