Jason Momoa Shares a Sombre Update on His Aquaman Future: “It’s Not Looking Too Good.”

Jason Momoa has addressed his future as Aquaman beyond this month’s sequel release, but it seems that his time may be up as the aquatic hero.

Jason Momoa is one of the hottest properties in Hollywood, but as he prepares to make what seems to be his last appearance as DC hero Aquaman, there is a definite question hanging over his future as part of the franchise. This is something that the actor addressed head-on in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight ahead of the movie’s premiere next weekend.

For more than a year, the status of Zack Snyder’s DC heroes in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DCU has slowly become clearer, with Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck’s departures from their roles as Superman and Batman respectively being followed by reports that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Ezra Miller’s The Flash are also now done. Which leaves Momoa’s Aquaman as the last man standing – and from recent marketing for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, it appears that this will indeed be his last stand.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Momoa spoke at length about how it appears that, whether he wants it or not, this is probably the end for Aquaman. He said:

“I don’t necessarily want it to be the end… [but] I don’t think it’s really, like, a choice. The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there’s a possibility, but right now, I’m like, ‘It’s not looking too good.’ I love this character and [I would want to] play it for a long time. I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like there’s a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world. So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it.”

Momoa explained that the new regime of Gunn and Safran are currently “building their own world,” which begs the question of whether there is another role for Momoa coming down the line.

“If there’s a place in their world for me, I would love to be a part of it. This is my home. Warner and DC is definitely my home. So, that’s all I’ll say.”

Jason Momoa Says Playing Aquaman is Unlike Any Other RoleWarner Bros. Pictures

Although he future for Aquaman looks bleak, Momoa is certainly not downbeat about it. When Warner Bros. created DC Studios and appointed James Gunn and Peter Safran as the keepers of all things DC, Momoa had a meeting about his future with the franchise and shared a video on his social media accounts celebrating what it meant for him and one particular DC dream.

This led to many speculating that the Aquaman star will be playing the beefed up indestructible mercenary Lobo at some point in the future. While this has not been confirmed, there have been many indicators that it will happen, and it is really a question of when rather than if. In the meantime, though, Momoa is still looking back fondly on his time as Arthur Curry, a character that he says is unlike any other he has played in terms of fan reactions. He said:

“If I just put it in the simplest [terms], it makes my heart smile. You know, I had roles before, [but] they’re nothing like this. You have kids coming up, really excited to see you, and adults. But at the end of the day, my passion growing up was always about the oceans, and being Polynesian, and being an activist. It’s cool because I get to like do that in my real life and [playing Aquaman] also obviously puts [those interests on] a higher platform.”

Jason Momoa will get to tell one more story as the King of Atlantis in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which will hit cinemas on December 22, 2023.
