The Los Angeles Lakers made history on Saturday as they became the first team in NBA history to win the league’s In-Season Tournament championship and take home the NBA Cup.

The Lakers proved to be the best team all tournament long, thanks to their never-seems-to-get-old superstar LeBron James. James had that look in his eye all season long, which earned them not only the Cup but also an extra $500,000 in their bank account. It was not like James needed the extra money, but it was certainly motivation. Guys like James, Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell, and Rui Hachimura may not need the extra money, but the Lakers’ young and two-way guys like Colin Castleton, Alex Fudge and D’Moi Hodge certainly do.

James promised the young guys he’d win the Cup to secure money. NBA insider Mac Spears spoke to Fudge and said he knew James would finish the job.

“I knew LeBron was going to do it. He told me before the game and said, ‘This is for you [Alex] Fudge. This is for you for D’Moi [Hodge]. This is for everybody,” Fudge said. “I trusted him and now we’re here. Just knowing that he is thinking about us is a blessing. Not too many people are like that. That just says who LeBron is.”

“He told the rookies, ‘I got y’all. Don’t even worry about it,’” Hodge said.

The three two-way guys on the roster are earning $559,782 this year, and they’ll be getting close to that, thanks to the incentive.

The Purple and Gold went undefeated in the tournament, thanks to James’ stellar play. In six games prior to the championship game, James averaged 26.4 points, eight rebounds, and seven assists while shooting 56.8% from the field and 60% from three.

The King was elite all tournament long, and thanks to him, LA won the inaugural in-season tournament championship. Now, LeBron will look to hang banner number 18 and earn these young guys their first ring come June.
