The film has set records since its July 21 release in theaters, earning more than $1.4 billion dollars, and becoming the most successful film of 2023 and has become the highest earning movie in Warner Bros history.

Margot, 33, bought the rights to Barbie from toymaker Mattel through her production company LuckyChap, and approached Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig to write the script.

Greta, 40, in turn, teamed up with her partner Noah Baumbach, 54, to write the script and then approached Margot about directing the film.

In a panel discussion after a screening of the film at the Writers Guild of America, the Marriage Story writer admitted he wasn’t completely on board with the project, according to Variety.

‘I thought it was a terrible idea and Greta signed me up for it,’ he said.

‘I was just like, “I don’t see how this is going to be good at all,’ he explained.

‘I kind of blocked it for a while and every time she’d bring it up, I’d be like, “You’ve gotta get us out of this.” And then the pandemic happened…’

The Squid and the Whale writer’s attitude changed after Greta showed him  a couple of pages.

‘It was Barbie waking up in her Dreamhouse and coming out to her backyard and meeting somebody who was sick and dying,’ the White Noise director said.

‘I read these pages and I thought, “I understand now what this is.” … The movie is about embracing your mortality and about the mess of it all, so it was exciting.’

Subtitles will be available for the hearing impaired, but an American Sign Language version will also be released when the film debuts on Max

Greta spoke of the pressure of being a woman delivering her first big budget production.

‘It was a risk for the studio to make it and for Mattel to make it,’ the director admitted.

‘And it’s also, as a “lady director” and a lady thing and it’s a big risk for a lady – in that context,’ she continued, adding, ‘I wanted it to work because I wanted to maybe make it easier for whatever the next thing is.’

The winners will be announced at the Grammys ceremonies February 4.
