Scarlett Johansson clarified why she opted to wear Harvey Weinstein’s ex-wife’s brand, Marchesa.

Scarlett Johansson made headlines back in 2018 after she opted to wear a Marchesa gown at that year’s Met Gala. What made her choice of clothing controversial was the company that made the dress. Marchesa is a high-end women’s brand created by Harvey Weinstein’s ex-wife, Georgina Chapman, and Keren Craig. Given that Chapman has an association with the former film producer, many deemed the former’s act as controversial.

However, the Black Widow actress issued a statement to clarify her wardrobe choice despite the intense backlash.

Back in 2017, reports of 𝑠e𝑥ual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein came to the surface. Over 80 women in the entertainment industry accused him of his heinous acts. It was earlier rumored that Miramax used to put pressure on celebrities to wear Marchesa to major events.

Felicity Huffman confirmed via The Hollywood Reporter that the convicted s-x offender had threatened to support his then-wife’s fashion brand otherwise he wouldn’t put money into promoting her movie, Transamerica. In 2018, Scarlett Johansson made an appearance at the Met Gala wearing a Marchesa gown.

The Avengers: Endgame actress had to face intense backlash for supporting Weinstein’s ex-beau, Georgina Chapman’s brand due to his infamous reputation. However, the actress explained that she faced no pressure to wear a Marchesa outfit but rather she was the one who initiated to creation of a custom design for the event.

The Lucy actress told Variety that she was not strained to choose Marchesa but it was entirely her own choice. She explained that she wanted to show her support to the women behind the establishment of this brand.

She stated,

“I wore Marchesa because their clothes make women feel confident and beautiful, and it is my pleasure to support a brand created by two incredibly talented and important female designers.”

She did not mention the producer in her statement meanwhile her reps told the outlet that she approached the brand two months before the Met Gala event. Even the spokesperson for Marchese shared their insights on their collaboration with the MCU alum stating,

“We are truly honored that Scarlett chose to wear Marchesa for the Met Gala” adding, “She is an amazingly talented actor who has incredible style and presence. It was wonderful to work so closely with her in creating this custom look.”

Marchesa, on the other hand, faced a major fallout ever since 𝑠e𝑥ual abuse allegations against Weinstein surfaced. Not only did actresses stop wearing the brand clothes but it also faced criticism for its involvement with the former producer. Meanwhile, Chapman finalized her divorce from her ex-husband in 2021. The former pair split in 2017 following the reports about his allegations shocked the world.
