Gael García Bernal’s Confirmation Fuels Anticipation for The Boys: Mexico Spinoff.

The “Cassandro” actor is exec-producing the fourth series set in the universe of “The Boys,” following “Diabolical” and “Gen V.”

Gael García Bernal is confirming that The Boys is headed to Mexico.

In a new interview with Variety, the Cassandro and Coco star acknowledged that he’s involved in a fourth series set in the universe of Amazon’s irreverent superhero satire, which was first reported by Deadline last week.

“I’m very excited about what we can do, because we can do something very interesting in Latin America,” Bernal told Variety.

According to Deadline, Blue Beetle scribe Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is writing The Boys: Mexico, which would follow the animated anthology Diabolical and the live-action, college-set series Gen VAndor star Diego Luna is reportedly executive-producing the spinoff with Bernal, and the two are said to be considering supporting roles in the show. Variety adds that it’s being planned as a Spanish-language project.

A representative for Amazon declined to comment.

Story details are being kept under wraps, but it’s safe to say the show will be set in, well, Mexico. Bernal’s involvement is particularly enjoyable because he previously starred in the Marvel project Werewolf by Night, and The Boys is a series known for lampooning pop culture and politics, including the Hollywood superhero machine. Dunnet-Alcocer is similarly coming off writing DC’s Blue Beetle, and Luna is known for another mega-franchise between Andor and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Based on the comics by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys takes place in a world populated by superheroes who often behave badly — really badly. The R-rated title introduced the mega-corporation Vought, which turned superheroes into a pharmaceutical empire by injecting infants with a serum called Compound V, turning the babies into supes.

The mothership series is currently planning to release its fourth season next year, whileGen V finished its freshman run last month. The Gen V season 1 finale tied directly into the events of The Boys season 4, which will then connect to Gen V season 2, and so on.

The Boys: Mexico is the latest piece of the puzzle for an expanding franchise. “Eric [Kripke] has had a vision for what this all leads to for years now, and we’ve been in an ongoing conversation about what comes next,” Amazon’s head of television, Vernon Sanders, previously told EW of the showrunner and franchise architect. “So it’s probably premature to talk about that beyond saying we believe in Eric, and if Eric is interested in continuing the story, we’ll be the first ones in line to really work with him on what that is. But right now we’re super-focused on Gen V and an amazing season 4 of The Boys, which I think is going to blow fans away.”
