After experiencing a wardrobe malfunction, Anne Hathaway was heckled during an awards ceremony

Anne Hathaway had a horrible night an awards show following a wardrobe malfunction and getting booed by fans.

Easily one of the most successful actors of her generation, it often seems like Anne Hathaway can do it all. Between starring in several hit movies and winning a lot of awards, Hathaway has become a big enough star to be able to afford a lot of real estate.

Unfortunately for Hathaway, however, she has had to deal with some truly awful moments in the public eye. One example of that is the night Hathaway suffered a wardrobe malfunction and got booed by fans.

Anne Hathaway Had A Nightmare Experience At A 2013 Awards Show

After the release of Les Misérables in 2012, Anne Hathaway should have been on top of the world. Sadly for the actor, however, what should have been one of her best nights descended so much that it became a nightmare. This is because Hathaway suffered a pair of nightmare scenarios the night she attended the BAFTA Awards in 2013.

At the BAFTA Awards held in 2013, Hathaway won Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in Les Misérables. Sadly for the actor, however, virtually none of the conversation about her from the following day focused on her big win.

What awards did Anne Hathaway win for her Les Misérables performance, according to TV Guide?

  • Golden Globe-Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture
  • Critics’ Choice Movie Awards-Best Supporting Actress
  • BAFTA Film Awards-Best Supporting Actress
  • Screen Actors Guild Awards-Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role
  • Washington D.C. Film Critics Association-Best Supporting Actress
  • Detroit Film Critics Society-Best Supporting Actress
  • New York Film Critics Online-Best Supporting Actress
  • Oscar-Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role

Instead, almost everyone online and in the media was much more focused on something that happened before the awards show even began. As Hathaway rushed down the red carpet, she infamously got booed by a group of people who were in attendance.

Typically, when stars walk down the red carpet, they are met with nothing but adulation by the fans in attendance. That fact left everyone who saw the clip of Hathaway getting booed with one question; what went so wrong for the talented actor?

What were the top stars who were booed at awards shows, according to Watchmojo?

  • Anne Hathaway
  • Kristen Stewart
  • Vanilla Ice
  • Ed Sheeran
  • Kendall & Kylie Jenner
  • One Direction
  • Eminem
  • Justin Bieber
  • OutKast
  • Kanye West

A few days after Hathaway got booed on the red carpet, she appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. During the resulting conversation, Hathaway explained what led to her getting booed. Based on Hathaway’s version of events, almost everything went wrong for her the night of the 2013 BAFTA awards show.

As Hathaway explained to Leno, the night of the BAFTA Awards started on a sour note for her. “I caught the flu.”

From there, things only went from bad to worse for the actor. Like all actors, Hathaway had to get dressed and go through the process of getting her hair and makeup fixed before she made her way to the red carpet.

Unfortunately for Hathaway, however, the first step in her preparations went completely wrong. As Hathaway explained to Leno, she had a wardrobe malfunction as she tried to get ready.

“This dress had been custom made for me. … It was so wonderful. And the zipper broke! … My stylist went ‘Oh God,’ and literally ran out of the room. I don’t know where she went. She just ran away.”

Once Hathaway’s stylist returned, she brought a backup dress that she had for the actor. Amazingly enough, however, Hathaway explained to Leno that things still didn’t work out at that point.

According to Hathaway, she had to be sewn into the second dress only to realize it didn’t fit right. “I look(ed) like a turkey that has been sewn together.”

After Hathaway had to be cut out of her second dress of the night, her stylist came to the rescue with a third gown. Fortunately, Hathaway’s third outfit of the night looked amazing, but by then, the damage was already done.

Between everything Hathaway went through to get ready, she and her team were significantly behind schedule. As a result, by the time Hathaway arrived at the BAFTA Awards, she needed to rush down the red carpet to get inside the building on time.

As Hathaway explained to Leno, her late arrival forced her to rush past the interviewers and fans who were on the red carpet. Since other stars signed autographs for the fans, Hathaway was booed by them for rushing by.

“I was so late that I had to run straight down to the end of the carpet and miss all the interviews. And, the worst part was, I missed the fans — signing (autographs). They’re out in the cold and the rain and the sleet, and they booed me! … So, I got booed, my dress ripped and I had the flu.”

Winning An Oscar Became A Nightmare For Anne Hathaway

After Anne Hathaway won a slew of awards for Les Misérables, including an Oscar, many people online quickly became sick of her. In fact, there was so much hate directed at Hathaway at that time that the term “Hathahate” was spawned.

Many years later, in 2022, Hathaway spoke at the Elle Women in Hollywood event. During her speech, Hathaway reflected on gaining a new perspective on what it meant to be hated.

“Ten years ago, I was given an opportunity to look at the language of hatred from a new perspective. For context — this was a language I had employed with myself since I was seven. And when your self-inflicted pain is suddenly somehow amplified back at you at, say, the full volume of the internet…It’s a thing.”

Later during her speech, Hathaway discussed realizing after the backlash that she wanted to do everything she could to avoid that kind of hate.

“When it happened to me, I realized that this wasn’t it. This wasn’t the spot. When what happened, happened, I realized I had no desire to have anything to do with this line of energy, on any level. I would no longer create art from this place. I would no longer hold space for it, live in fear of it, nor speak its language for any reason, to anyone, including myself.”

Most importantly for Hathaway, her takeaway from the backlash was to support women who find success.

“Hate seems to me to be the opposite of life; in soil that harsh, nothing can grow properly, if at all. I want to say: Be happy for women. Period. Especially be happy for high-achieving women. Like, it’s not that hard.”
