Ariana Grande opens up about feeling 'deeply misunderstood' in 2023, but finds solace and joy in a matching tattoo with Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo, describing it as one of her most transformative and fulfilling years.

Ariana Grande posted a note in her stories reflecting on 2023, calling it ‘one of the most transformative, most challenging, and yet happiest and most special years of my life’ – calling herself ‘deeply misunderstood.’

The artist also revealed she got matching tattoos with Wicked co-star Cynthia Erivo.

The stars got the phrase ‘For Good’ tatted on the palm on both of their hands – a nod Wicked.

The pop star, 30, revealed the matching tattoos via her Instagram stories on Friday.

Ariana, who has over 60 tattoos, had the date they got inked in the stories – April 24, 2023.

Wicked the movie is based on the hit Broadway play, which was based on the 1995 book Wicked: Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire.

Cynthia Erivo is tapped to play Elphaba and Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible.

Wicked will be split in two parts, released one year apart.

Wicked Part 1 was originally set for a Christmas Day, 2024 release but it has been moved up to November 27, 2024, with the second installment set to arrive December 25, 2025.

The note she shared reflected on her 2023 year, which was the year she worked on the Wicked films as well as work on a new album that she has revealed she is releasing in 2024.

Ariana added bubbles on her note on her stories, writing: ‘One of the most transformative, most challenging, and yet happiest and most special years of my life. There were so many beautiful and yet polarized feelings.

‘I’ve never felt more at the mercy of and in acceptance of what life was screaming to teach me. I’ve never felt more fulfilled by or present in my work, being able to cherish every moment.

In addition to touching on her role as Glinda, Ariana appeared to address criticism she faced this year for her personal life.

‘I have never felt more pride or joy or love while simultaneously feeling so deeply misunderstood by people who don’t know me, who piece whispers together and make what they want out of me and their assumptions of my life.

Adding: I have learned and how much more important one of those things is than the other.

‘I have never felt more tightly held of fiercely protected by those who love and understand me (friends, family and fans alike). I feel safe, even amidst so many things I’d usually be afraid of. I am listening to and trusting myself, even when fear or trauma tells me not to.

‘I am reacting to things that deserve my energy and removing and protecting myself from things that do not.’

Ariana continued: ‘I am so eternally grateful for all of the feelings I was lucky enough to feel so deeply this year. Mine and Galinda’s alike. The unfathomably hard ones and the inexplicably happy ones. I feel more human than ever. I feel more deeply than ever. I feel softer and stronger, all at once.

Ariana concluded her note: ‘I am wrapping you all in a cocoon of love and wishing you a very happy, healthy new year. If you ever feel misunderstood or alone, just remeber that it will pass and you are not. Take a deep breath and know that you are so incredibly loved. I cannot wait for next year. :)’
