“That was above my paygrade”: Henry Cavill Washed His Hands Off of Man of Steel’s Most Controversial Scene

Cavill Explains Superman’s Maximum Collateral Damage in Man of Steel.

Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman is probably the most iconic role of his career, as he had perfected the character during his time in Zack Snyder’s DCEU. Cavill had managed to attract the viewers in his first film, Man of Steel, as he showcased subtle emotions which did not go unnoticed by the fans. Though the actor played the role in a limited number of movies, he managed to capture the heroism and the very essence of the character.

Despite so much popularity, the actor was kicked out of the DCEU as James Gunn decided to reboot the entire franchise. While this decision was met with backlash, David Corenswet had an uncanny similarity with the Enola Holmes actor. While the decision to sack Henry Cavill was met with a bad eye from the fans, it is great that he parted ways with the role as the 2013 film featured a scene that isn’t very Superman-like.

Henry Cavill Points Out The Loss Of Innocent Lives In Man of Steel

One of the many reasons that Henry Cavill’s portrayal of Superman was adored by the fans was not because of his commanding presence and chiseled physique, rather it was how he had a heartfelt emotion that made him so popular as The Man of Tomorrow.

During an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actor was asked about how he felt about the “destruction and loss of life” in Man of Steel, and he said that it was above his “paygrade” and the collateral damage was questioned more than him killing General Zod.

“I think that may have been part of the master plan all along. When it comes to the major story stuff I can’t really speak on that, because that was above my paygrade. What I can speak of is the idea of Superman, especially when the finger is pointed at collateral damage in the first movie. I mean, we’re talking about a greenhorn.”

However, he added that if he had played the character, he would try to keep it to a bare minimum.

“Let’s say now, [if] Superman has the same threat again, that’s a different story. He would, of course, bring collateral damage to an absolute minimum, but in that, he’s just trying to survive because if he doesn’t, the planet’s gone. That’s the excuse I make for Superman. He’s fresh and he’s new, and it’s very easy to point out the faults in someone after they’ve done it, but put yourself in their shoes and see what happens.”

While Henry Cavill thinks that he could have been a better Superman, he paid homage to Tom Cruise as he thinks he is the real deal in Hollywood.

Henry Cavill Pays Respect To Tom Cruise

During an exclusive interview with IGN, The Tudors actor gave his opinion about Tom Cruise, calling him an “incredibly tough cookie,” and if he ever goes against Superman, he will certainly stop him without any kryptonite.

Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible

“Tom Cruise doesn’t need kryptonite to crunch Superman; he certainly does not. Tom Cruise is an incredibly tough cookie and he’s the real-life Superman.”

Cavill’s opinion of the Top Gun actor is true and genuine, as Cruise is regarded as the actor who saved Hollywood with his Top Gun: Maverick, and to think of action, Tom Cruise’s name would be the first name that pops up instantly.
