Live-Action Luffy and Usopp Re-Enact One Piece Anime’s Most Iconic Scene

The Netflix One Piece live-action’s Luffy and Usopp join the anime cast as they recreate one of the most iconic scenes from the entire series.

The casts of the anime and Netflix’s One Piece recently reenacted one of the most iconic scenes from the series on stage.

Iñaki Godoy (Luffy) and Jacob Gibson (Usopp) were unveiled as special guests at this year’s Jump Festa, joining their respective anime voice actors, Mayumi Tanaka and Akemi Okamura. As Nami’s Okamura recited her lines from the Arlong arc, stabbing herself before finally pleading for Luffy to help her, Tanaka and Godoy entertained audiences with their different takes on the character as they alternate lines. The highlight of the scene was when they yelled out “Atarimaeda!” and “Of course I will!” Gibson was then introduced alongside the Japanese voice actors for the other Straw Hats, the scene ending with them going to take down Arlong’s crew.

Nami’s “Help me” scene remains important to both fans of the anime and live-action, establishing the sense of ‘found family’ that influenced the structure of One Piece Season 1. “It’s not only an origin story of how this crew comes together,” showrunner Matt Owens explained. “It’s an encapsulation of the idea of found family. A spirit of togetherness and adventure.” Luffy displayed at that moment that despite Nami’s betrayal, he and the Straw Hats were willing to go to any lengths to help her.

The scene is set to appear again in the One Piece remake, which has been announced to be adapting the “East Blue Saga” where this scene hails from. Similar to the video above, the initial anime scene was less about animation and more about the heart, character acting and soundtrack — aspects that One Piece anime staff are divided on regarding the remake and how it will do justice to the efforts of those who came before.

The One Piece live-action series is currently streaming on Netflix. Crunchyroll streams the anime, which is described: “Monkey. D. Luffy refuses to let anyone or anything stand in the way of his quest to become the king of all pirates. With a course charted for the treacherous waters of the Grand Line and beyond, this is one captain who’ll never give up until he’s claimed the greatest treasure on Earth: the Legendary One Piece!”
